OUR FIRST - CHANDLER'S DAY OUT

In memory of our dear friend and brother,Brandon "Chandler", we had our very first "CHANDLER'S DAY OUT". We came up with the name, because Chandler used to love taking our graduates out for lunch, a movie, or go out with a video camera to continue their education.

So about (3) weeks ago we met at CHICK FIL A, (one of our supporters), had some great tasting lunch, jumped in the HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS van with a bunch of our guys and drove down highway 126 with both a still camera and a video camera and let the guys see what they could photograph. Below is some of their work...

Great job guys! It was a really fun day, can't wait for the next one.

Last week, (19) of our Alumni Group met at In & Out Burgers in Newhall for our first ever Angel Tree gift giveaway.

Angel Tree is a ministry of Prison Fellowship, which allows those who are incarcerated to buy Christmas Gifts for their children. Studies have found that if you can keep a relationship between incarcerated parents and their children intact this will help to keep those children from ending up behind bars... Angel Tree coordinates with volunteers to go out and buy and then deliver those Christmas gifts to the children, always reminding them that the gifts are from their fathers (or mothers). We found out that one of the kids had moved to Oakland. Not wanting to disappoint that child, we drove up to Oakland and dropped off our last gift.

It was a great time of fellowship. Thanks to everyone who was involved. We look forward to what God will do with HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS in 2012. We wish everyone a Happy New Year.

We've started our hands-on camera class with Ryan Sheridan. Ryan is an accomplished Director of Photography and technical guru who works for the world famous, Otto Nemenz Camera in Hollywood. The guys are absolutely loving Ryan's class. His enthusiasm is contagious. He's a terrific instructor who we're lucky to have.

Our classes are going very well. We are now a couple of weeks into Editing (taught by Stan), Typing & Computers (taught by Cyndi and Scott), beginning acting (taught by Chris and Josh) and "The Careers of Television" (taught by Gary).

In the next couple of weeks we will be starting camera class, creative editing, new technologies as well as having a composer come in to discuss writing music for the screen.

Stan and I shared a fun moment during one of our classes. Really looking forward to the coming weeks.

We've had a very busy past two weeks... We said goodbye and congratulations to our graduating semester #7 class. We had (10) graduates and gave certificates of appreciation to (4) of our teacher's aids. Right before our graduation we...

We are all really looking forward to the next (12) weeks of instruction to see how God is going to move in these men's lives and the lives of their families.

ABOVE THE LINE - EPISODE #105

Last weekend we shot our 5th episode of ABOVE THE LINE. On this episode, our very special guest was Barry Josephson, who has been part of the producing team of such movie hits as ENCHANTED, WILD WILD WEST and such television series as BONES, TALES FROM THE CRYPT and Fox's new series, THE FINDER. Mr. Josephson was amazing and shared many interesting stories and advise with you guys. They all really enjoyed his interview and meeting him "on stage" (in our converted classroom). Thank you so much Barry Josephson!

Our student/inmates once again, got true hands on experience building the set, running the camera, lights and sound. It was a great experience to all involved.

Once again, Chick fil A - Valencia stepped up and helped us with food. We cannot express how much we appreciate their support. For those reading this blog, please go out and support this fine organization wherever you may live.

We'd also like to thank all of our Hollywood Professionals for giving their time to make this episode and this experience so rich for our students. We know it's been awhile since our last update, but that is because a lot has been going on...all of it good.

Last Tuesday, September 13, 2011, HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS officially held their first "MERIT Alumni Meeting" in partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. David Taylor from CELEBRATE RECOVERY has come onboard to help us each week. This last meeting was terrific! We had a great response. We shared with our current student/inmates about the direction we were taking the Alumni meeting and received and enthusiastic round of applause. Many of our guys know and respect Dave Taylor. We expect the Alumni group to grow each week.

For those who might not know, the LASD MERIT Alumni meeting is held each week to help and support both former inmates and their families. Helping men to change their lives, deal with their addictions, to never return to jail/prison and help them reconcile with their families. For family members, it teaches them how to support their men that are still incarcerated and once they're released. It is a terrific program that HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS is proud to be part of.

On Wednesday, Hal Lary came in to talk to the class about his job as head of transportation on numerous 20th Century Fox Television series, like GLEE, "24" and RAISING HOPE. Hal shared his vast experience coordinating all the transportation needs over his 30 year career. He told some terrific stories from his experiences on "24", RUSH HOUR and other motion pictures and television shows he's worked on. He is one of our favorite guest speakers. Our student/inmates always enjoy it when he comes in. Hal doesn't sugarcoat how difficult it is to get into transportation, but it's not impossible.

Yesterday we had our first monthly HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS ALUMNI AND FAMILY MEETING in a west Los Angeles Conference room. It was a great meeting with a good turnout for this first meeting.

We talked about the exciting things going on with HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS and some of the future plans within the Los Angeles County Jail system. We believe these changes will offer us more exciting opportunities. Sorry to be so vague here, we'll talk about those changes as soon as they're official...

After our initial presentation, we opened it up to to the group for questions, discussions and suggestions. After all this Alumni meeting is for them, we needed their input.

We are halfway though our semester. It's a great class and the students are learning a lot and seem to be really enjoying the classes.

This week we started our camera class with guest instructor Ryan Sheridan of Otto Nemenz Camera. Ryan is terrific instructor and had the students hanging on his every word. You could really see Ryan's passion come out as he spoke.

During this weeks class, Ryan talked about how the camera, grip and electric departments are put together and what each person does within that department. He also talked about the changing technology, how we've moved from film to the digital video capture.

I find it so interesting to watch how our guys, who know nothing about the television or motion picture industry, end up catching our passion for this industry and how quickly the learn.

HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS GOES TO LOUISIANA

. . . . . "Angola shines beyond the storms of life." . . . . .

Last weekend, we traveled to hot and muggy Louisiana, more accurately, Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. We were there for two reason, for the Awana, RETURNING HEARTS CELEBRATION; a program to build a Godly relationship between inmate fathers and their children. This was our second time to this event. The other reason we were there was to discuss with the Warden staff bringing a modified HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS program to Angola. We're still deciding what that program would look like. While we were there we toured their "media" departments. Our first stop was to the "TV Station".

...Which they call "the closet" for obvious reasons. They're able to do a lot with a little. We were very impressed.

Our next stop was their radio station.

It broadcasts 24/7 throughout the prison.

And our last stop was the Angolite Magazine office.

The Angolite Magazine was first published in 1976. They publish (6) editions per year. It is completely run my inmates and gained a national reputation as a quality magazine after winning several international awards.

We stayed in nearby St. Francisville which has so much history. This Southern Church was build in the 1882 and stands so majestically.

A little Louisiana atmosphere...

The food there was great. Not exactly low-cal, but great tasting.

Including the Alligator. It was a great trip!!

Last week 20th Century Fox held it's first 2011 Veteran's Appreciation Event (on the Fox Lot) to thank Veteran's for their service to our Country. This first event was primarly aimed at Fox employees who have served but all Veterans were welcome.

Organizations that support Veteran's were invited to come. HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS was one of those invited organizations. (Pictured from left to right are Richard Straub USMC, Cyndi Hall, Co-Founder of HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS and Reggie Sterling, United States Air Force.)

We have started a new semester...semester #7. Wow, we're moving into year three and the program just keeps growing. This is going to be our largest class ever with 45 student/inmates.

This semester we're going to be teaching the some additional classes. Yes, we're continuing all of our classes relating to the Television and Motion Picture Industry, but we've discovered many of our guys who are both in this current class (over half) and those who have graduated are lacking basic typing and computer skills so... Cyndi and Scott are taking that on. They've begun teaching an (8) week class on typing and basic computer (Word, Excel, etc.) This should be interesting and the guys seem excited to learn something that will help them in the 21 Century job market.

June 3rd was HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS 2nd year anniversary... Also last week we celebrated our 6th graduation. This graduation was dedicated to our friend and HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS instructor Brandon Chandler who we lost on May 4th to Liver Cancer. Many funny and heart warming stories were shared by the speakers. Alumni Robert D. was this semester's guest speaker. He shared some great wisdom to the class on how he continues to win his battle over drug addiction. Robert has now been out for over a year and half (Clean and sober for 2 years) and continues to do very well. He is now a supervisor at his job. Great job Robert! We're so proud of you.

Last week our special guest speaker was Mr. Paul Snider, First Assistant Director on the hit CBS television series, NCIS. Paul was a terrific instructor and had our inmate/students full attention as he discussed his job on the show.

Paul walked our guys through how a big car chase and stunt is planned, prepped and shot. Paul then showed the finish scene as it aired on CBS.

Thank you Paul for sharing your time with "our guys". It really means a lot to us.

As we've shared over the last few weeks, Brandon "Chandler" was an extremely important member of HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS family and he will be missed greatly. During this time we've received many e-mails and letters from current inmate/students, graduates and their families telling us what Chandler's involvement has meant to them.

We felt this might be a good time to share some of those comments with you.

The Hollywood Impact Studios Family must share some sad news. Our dear friend and brother, Brandon "Chandler" went home to be with the Lord today. Below is the statement from his family and our friends, The Chandlers who have said it better than we could:

"We know he is dancing, pain free and no doubt has already taken over the video department. Our sweet boy, Brandon "Chandler" went home to be with the Lord this morning at 3:45AM. He went peacefully in his sleep with his dad by his side.

Thank you all of you for your thoughts and prayers these last few months, please keep them coming as we start this new journey.

We are so grateful that we will dance with him again some day!

One of the unique aspects of our ministry and mentoring program is that it continues even once
"our guys" (HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS Graduates) have served their time and are released. Since our last posting, our guys were very involved in the filming of a 168 Film Festival project.

They worked both behind and in front of the camera. They were terrific crew members and amazing actors as well.

For many this was their first time to work on a real set.

"Potter's Hand" was a true blessing for everyone involved. Thanks to the entire cast and crew for making it so...

HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS - Praise Report

Most of our reports are from inside "the classroom". We thought it might be interesting to share some of the great news about "our guys" who have graduated and been released.

We now have many graduates who have been out for nearly a year and half. Most are working back in the community, staying plugged into their churches and raising their families. Here's just a few stories; one of our guys works with the Veteran's Administration, another works full time as a butcher, another is working in sales, one is working full time at a substance treatment center, two are working full time in the television industry and many others, many are volunteering with HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS, giving back.

But it's not just about working. We've also seen at least one marriage saved and many families that have been reconciled. We now have half a dozen of our graduates regularly attending the Tinseltown Bible Study. One young man is back in college getting his degree. Plus many more successes.

God has really changed these men's lives and we're seeing what that change means. Please continue to pray for this ministry, our instructors and our graduates.

We have just begun semester #6 at the Pitchess Detention Center. We've decided to do somthing a little different, though. Instead of starting with a brand new class and all new students, we decided to do an "advanced" class using our students from semester #5; a kind of "Hollywood Impact Studio 201" class; building on what they learned last semester. We are having to take on some new student/inmates to make up for those who have left Pitchess. We will be starting with 20 students.

This semester is entitled, "Preparing For Broadcast". Our student/inmates will edit, title and prepare all of our previous ABOVE THE LINE episodes to "air" on the LASD TV channel hopefully sometime in the summer.

As we've said in the past, we want HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS to act like a real studio, not just a school and this is just another step. Next entry we will share some of what God is doing with our guys after they get out.

We just completed our 5th Semester episode of ABOVE THE LINE with special guests Murray Adler, musical contractor for THE SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY and AMERICAN DAD, and Christine Day, musical casting director for the hit Fox series, GLEE. Thanks so much to both Murray and Christine as well as our host Nikki D'Amico.

If you're new to this blog, ABOVE THE LINE is an interview show produced at the end of each semester by Hollywood Impact Graduates. This is where our instructors and students trade places. The students, create the set, run the cameras, and adjust the lights as instructors give them one on one, hands-on guidance. Below, Gaffer Daz Reynolds instructs students on lighting.

We are coming to the end of our fifth semester. We will be shooting our next episode of ABOVE THE LINE on Saturday (1/29/11). It has gone by so fast. Always striving to do a better job, we ask our students at the end of each semester to complete a questionnaire. For all of you who support and work with us, Iwe just wanted to share this note from one of our students...

"I pray that this program will continue to help individuals incarcerated like myself. This program is a true blessing, as well as a life changing experience for me. A father that has gained skills that would cost thousands of dollars, but I receive them for free. I can't put a price on the knowledge I have gained. I love all of you like brothers and sisters. Above is a photograph of a tour I gave recently of the Fox Foley Stage. I am often asked, "What is foley and how did it get it's name?"

Foley is a sound effects technique named after a sound effects editor at Universal Studios, Jack Foley who invented it. Foley Artists, or "Walkers" create live sound effects on a foley stage as the watch the film projected on a screen in front of them. It's an extremely creative job that takes years to master.

At the end of our screenwriting class, we invited some of our actor friends to come in and read our students scripts.

The actors were amazed how good these short scripts were. Like the professionals they are, they memorized and performed each script beautifully. It brought more than one of our students to tears.

Last week, 33 of our HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS family met at 20th Century Fox for our first annual Christmas lunch. It was held in the Shirley Temple Room of the executive dinning room. Lots of great conversation and catching up with friends we've not seen recently.

After lunch we enjoyed a tour of the studio, including the set of BONES and New York Street.

The tour also included the scoring stage and the Foley stage (pictured above). We had such a glorious time. Everyone at HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS wishes you a very Merry and Blessed Christmas and a Happy 2011!

Derrick Warfel, one of our continuing guest instructors, came in again to teach screenwriting. Derrick is such an incredible teacher. Our students can not stop talking about how much they enjoy and learn in his class. After their first class, he gave them their assignment..."head to the computers to start writing your first script"... Derrick doesn't just teach them screenwriting though, he also covers how to write magazine articles and short stories.

Once again, Derrick is having them all compete in The Hollywood Impact Studios writing contest. First prize will be awarded. Thanks Derrick.

Last week, Keith Rogers, from Smart Post Sound, came in to teach a class on Pro Tools sound editing and re-recording mixing. For those who might not know, re-recording mixing is the final step in creating the sound track for a motion picture or television show. Re-recording mixers like Keith, combine (or mix) all the final sound effects, dialogue and music. It's a very creative job and our inmate/students, really enjoyed the information. Just another possible career path. Keith was a terrific teacher. He currently mixes for the Fox show, BONES. In years past he has also worked on such hits as PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA.

We're happy to report that our 20th Century Fox donated computers are all up and running. This is terrific news because now our student/inmates can use them during our screenwriting class and our resume and office skills class. Cyndi worked very hard to make this all happen. In our last class, "Post Production", we talked a lot about visual effects. The 20th Century Fox film, AVATAR, of course had a great deal of visual effects in it. Below is a brief clip from Giant Studios (one of the visual effects companies that worked on the film). We're five weeks into our twelve week semester. We have lost some of our inmate/students, (to early release & transfers) but we still have 25 men, who have all been eager to learn. It's interesting, but we have (2) inmate/students who actually asked the judge to extend their sentences so they can complete this semester at HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS... That is amazing to me.

The men now have five weeks of basic Avid editing taught by our intructors Stan and Chandler who report that each week their skills get stronger and stronger. You have to realize that for many of these men, they didn't even know how to use a computer much less a complicated editing system.

This last Wednesday, our instructor Chris and his wife Rachel came in and talked about how to become an "extra" on a TV show or movie. The men really enjoyed getting this information. This could help them earn some money when they get out.

We have some terrific news to share. Hollywood Impact Studios graduate, Alfio Corsaro and his wife, JoEllyn were Baptized last Wednesday at Grace Baptist Church. It was a great event. Many friends and loved ones showed up to celebrate with the Corsaros. We couldn't be more proud of Alfio.

We are in week three of Semester #5. This is our largest class to date, (34) students plus (5) teachers aids. It seems like a good mixture, all with varied interests. It'll be interesting to watch as they grow in the knowledge of the television industry. So far during my classes, they've had a lot of great questions.

As promised, below are the last five "commandments" from the SCREENWRITING U (www.screenwriting.com), article "The New 10 Commandments of Writing Screenplays" by Hal Croasmun.

6. Put your characters through hell.
Great parents take care of their children and don’t let harm come to them. Great writers put their characters in the worst possible places to challenge their beliefs and physical limitations.
Don’t get the two jobs mixed up. Audiences don’t go to movies to see characters lead safe lives. They want to see your characters take risks, experience danger, and barely escape from challenging situations.
Writing screenplays will make you a tough task-master. By your final draft, your characters should hate you for all the terrible things you did to them.
7. Free up your dialogue so you can express more character.
Beginning writers often fill their dialogue with exposition and story details, thus reducing the amount of character and creativity that shows up in that dialogue. Don’t do it.
Instead, put the exposition, information, and story details into the action and situations.
For example, instead of a trainer telling a new boxer that a certain philosophy doesn’t work, have him put the character in the boxing ring and learn it by having his ass kicked. Now, the trainer doesn’t have to lecture. In fact, he is free to talk about anything – breakfast, politics, his favorite dog, etc. – because the real meaning is being delivered through the action.
It completely frees you up so you can be much more creative with your dialogue.
8. Turn cliches into fresh ideas.
In the film industry, a cliché is defined as “something we’ve seen before.” If you write a script with the same plot or the same lead characters or the same situations, people will balk at them.
Audiences want to see familiar stories told in different ways and familiar characters with something special about them. That means that your characters, situations, actions, and dialogue need to have something unique to them.
Your challenge: Hunt down every cliché in your script and brainstorm more unique ways to accomplish their purpose. Give them a twist or unique spin or different voice. It takes a bit of work, but it instantly improves your screenplay.
9. Give yourself permission to write shit in your first draft…
…and push yourself for perfection in your final draft. Not the other way around.
This is a better strategy for writing screenplays than trying to be perfect on the first draft and shoving yourself into writer’s block.
First drafts are the time for total freedom of expression, not criticizing your writing. You want to discover what you can about your story, characters, etc.
On the other side, writers often send drafts to producers that aren’t even close to ready. That’s the time to bring out your internal critic and make sure this is a perfect draft.
The more in sync you are with your creative process, the faster you’ll achieve perfection.
10. Rethink your script…until it is the most amazing it can be.
This is the ultimate challenge of a professional screenwriter – having to rethink the same script over and over until you discover the perfect way to tell this story.
Even if you think your story or character is perfect, you should have the skills to re-envision it in many different ways. Not only will this help you write a better story, it will also help you work with production companies and Studios when they request script changes.

The New 10 Commandments of Writing Screenplays.

Writing Screenplays By Commandment

1. Entertain us…or it’s over!
Entertainment is the number one reason that people go to movies. Every producer and agent knows that. So it should be the #1 focus of your screenwriting. Become a master at making any character or situation entertaining and you’ll be a writer in demand.
To be blunt, if there is anything in your script that doesn’t entertain, fix it.
2. Make EVERYTHING more interesting.
The industry is filled with readers who are fed a gourmet diet of professional screenplays. If you want yours to stand out, it has to captivate their attention and cause them to forget that they are doing a job.
This should be an ongoing campaign of yours. Make your scenes more interesting. Make your characters more interesting. Make your dialogue more interesting. Make everything more interesting.
3. Give us a lead character we can’t stop following.
Professional screenwriters intentionally create characters we want to follow. They are unique, yet familiar. We can relate to them and want to go on the journey with that character.
In general, your protagonist should be the perfect person to lead us deep into this story and the conflict that is about to occur. Don’t settle for a good lead. Go for great.
4. Promise us something special…and deliver on it.
Somehow, you have to keep people reading until the last page. Here’s a solution.
About 15 years ago, I read a book called “A Story Is A Promise” by Bill Johnson. Since then, I’ve always looked at a script from the perspective of “What is the promise you’re making to the reader/audience and how do you keep it in a unique way?”
Essentially, you are promising some major achievement by the protagonist or some big confrontation that will happen in the 3rd Act between protag and antag. If the promise is strong enough, we’ll read every page to see what happens.
5. Show us deeper meaning.
Deeper meaning can be built into the plot, character, situations, actions, and dialogue of a script. It doesn’t have to be profound, just beneath the surface…and perceived by the audience.
Audiences and readers just don’t appreciate on-the-nose writing. Subtext gives them a chance to interact with the film. They have an internal experience of the story because they are interpreting what the dialogue and actions really mean.
Because of that, it is just as important to take care of the subtext of a story as it is to create the surface story.

THE FOUNDERS

Although this entry really has nothing to do with the Ministry, I wanted to add it anyway. As I said in the last entry, we're off for a month before starting next semester. Cyndi and I decided to take a little vacation to the Illinois and Michigan area with our son, daughter-in-law and grandson. We went Apple Picking and rented a cabin along the Lake Michigan waterfront. Great time!

Proud grandparents! It was fun and a time of much needed relaxation. The next semester will start soon...

Wow, this last semester seemed to fly by. We just celebrated our 4th Grauation last week. We started with 27 student/inmates but only had 9 graduates. They all sucessfully completed basic editing, basic camera, basic lighting, basic Pro Tools, wrote scripts and hopefully learned a great deal about the many different careers in the television industry.

This class did experience one thing that none of our other classes have; the jail riot that happened on August 22nd. We're very proud of this class and the many others in the MERIT Program. Because of the faith-based component in both our program and the MERIT Program, none of our inmate/students participated in the riot. They all held firm and even with the threat of personal harm to themselves they still refused to be part of it. The were all amazing men of faith! Thank God.

We are now down for a month before we start the next semester.

HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS - News & Updates

Last weekend HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS student/inmates, with the one on one guidance of our instructors, shot the third episode of ABOVE THE LINE. They constructed the set, put up the lights and ran the cameras.

This episodes special guest was Emmy Award winning composer Walter Murphy. (FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and many others). Our host was Carolyn Fallin, who brought a lot of energy to show. Crew call was at 7:30AM and by 10:00AM, the set and lights were up. All the departments ran very smoothly. By 10:30, our director, Josh Weigel was saying "Action". The photos below tell more of the story.

Last week at Grace Baptist Church one of the pastors read the verse below. It really hit me, nearly brought me to tears. I want to share this with everyone who works with and supports HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS. Cyndi and I really want to thank you for "doing it for Him."

During our classes we've discussed that for the most part, visual effects are produced in post production but that is not always the case. Sometimes, as in an episode of BONES, the planning started in pre-production, then involved production for a large portion of it and then finally post production put it all together. It's been a little while since we've given an update on our program... Well the
4th semester at the Pitchess Detention Center is underway. We started with 25 student/inmates. We're nearly half-way through. Gary has just finished teaching the overview of Hollywood Careers, Stan Cassio has finished basic Avid editing and now Chandler is teaching creative editing.

We're very fortunate to get Derek Warfel to come back this semester and teach creative writing. Inmate/students are writing their scripts and we have (3) actors coming in this week to "perform" them.

Chris Fallin has just begun teaching basic camera and lighting. They guys really enjoy the chance to get some real hands-on training on these cameras.

God just keeps delivering top notch instructors who are so willing to give their time to teach these men as they also share their faith in God. Cyndi and I are so thankful.

This last weekend she was assistant concert master with The Moorpark Symphony Orchestra as they played with The Riders of the Purple Sage. What a great concert. Lots of fun music and a great turn out, 1,000+ filled the outdoor event!

An exciting development occured recently, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, contracted HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS to produce a video for them called, "Out The Gate". It is intended to be shown to inmates who are about to be released. The content is designed to help them not return to jail. One of the terrific opportunities was that (5) of our graduates had the opportunity to work on the video... both in front and behind the camera. They helped those who are still behind bars...

It was a great experience for all involved!

It's hard to believe, but HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS has been teaching classes at the Pitchess Detention Center for one year! Wow, how time flies. We celebrated our one year anniversary at Maria's Italian Kitchen in Encino. It was a time for Cyndi and I to say thank you to all of our terrific, dedicated instructors and support staff. God has blessed this ministry with some terrific caring folks who are willing to donate so much of their time. Thank you all!

Pilot season is finally over for Gary. 20th Century Fox Television completed 15 pilots this year. It was a very busy time. Cyndi and I recently visited Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola. We went to share a little about HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS and what we're doing at the Pitchess Detention Center. We were also there as part of the "Returning Hearts" team from Grace Baptist Church.

For those of you who may not be aware of "Returning Hearts", it is part of Awana International - a program to help teach men how to be Godly fathers. Many studies have shown that if there is a good relationship between an incarcerated father and his children, the odds of his kids following in his footsteps drops dramatically.

During this event volunteers set up a carnival and inmate fathers invite their children to spend the entire day with them. It's a time to reconcile their relationships, share the Gospel and be the spiritual leaders God meant them to be. What an amazing day.

THOUGHTS, QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT "THE BUSINESS"

A few weeks ago I attended the National Association of Broadcasters or "N.A.B." convention in Las Vegas. For those of you who are not familiar with this, NAB is held every April and always in Las Vegas. Broadcasting related manufacturers come from all over the world to show their latest and greatest products. Companies likes Sony, Panasonic, Mole Richardson Lighting, JVC, Avid, Apple and many more all come to show what equipment they're manufacturing that will be available in the near future. The convention lasts for one week. Below are some of photos from this years NAB:

The big thing this year was 3-D technology, Alexa camera from Arriflex and the "5D" from Canon.

Our first 10 week program at Nickerson Gardens has come to an end. We gave out certificates of completion and HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS T-shirts to our grads. We look forward to starting our next course over the summer. It looks like it will be centered more on drama & music, but we're still in the planning stages. We'd like to thank the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks for helping kick this all off. Congratulations to our graduates. Thanks for all the hard work and dedication.

Sharing Some Good News

It is so incredable to see how God is working through the ministry. While doing some research on jail/prison recidivism rates. I came across this interesting statistic; according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department the total recidivism rate for inmates who have been released from jail for only 3 months are re-arrested at a 42.2% rate and within 6 months of their release, the total rate jumps to 57.4%.

This has to be "a God thing" because since we started in June of 2009, HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS has had approx. 20-25 graduates released from custody. At the time of this writing we have NOT HAD A SINGLE GRADUATE RE-ARRESTED! Some of are graduates are already gainfully employed, others are taking advantage of additional schooling and scholarships supplied by HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS.

I know this program is still young and we're going to have some disappointments, but you've got to admit a 0% recidivism rate at this time is pretty darn neat! Praise God.

Last weekend, we packed up the cars with equipment and headed down to Nickerson Gardens. Chris Fallin taught a camera and lighting workshop. It was so interesting to see that when we took the camera outside into the common area, kids flocked from throughout the housing project. Everyone got a chance to do some "hands-on" work with the camera.

It was neat to see people who'd never seen a camera clap board or hi-definition camera, step up and give it a try.

Thanks again to everyone who made the trek. Thanks especially to Chris Fallin, he's such a terrific teacher. God just continues to bless this ministry with terrific, caring volunteers.

Two weeks ago, we had another field trip for our students at Nickerson Gardens. We brought them to Carolyn Fallin's recording studio in Burbank to try their hand at voice over recording.

They all did a terrific job and had a lot of fun. A couple of the guys may look toward sound recording as a profession. This was a day they'll all remember for a very long time. Thank you Carolyn for sharing your truly God given gifts.

The Nickerson Gardens program is rolling along nicely, but this week we want to bring you up to speed on what's been happening at the Jail Program... Stan Cassio finished up basic, technical Avid editing and he turned it over to our creative editing teacher Brandon "Chandler" who has been teaching our guys creative editing.

Chandler finished his basic instruction last week and now has created (5) inmate/student teams who will compete in creating a HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS promo video. We're excited to see what the guys come up with.

There is a lot happening! I'm going to start with our program at Nickerson Gardens in Watts. This last week, our students had their second class held on the Fox Lot. They have really enjoyed it and have finally begun to open up to the possibilities...

These classes went over both production and post production and the careers they have to offer. They got to tour the entire Fox Lot; visiting Wardrobe, Grip & Electric, the Foley Stage and Fox Sports. But one of their highlights was visiting the scoring stage where Fox had an 80 piece orchestra. One of those 80 was our very own Cyndi Hall, who took some time to share her journey.

One of the truly neat developments in this ministry is that some of our alumni from the Pitchess Detention Center Program, who've now been out of jail for over 6 months, are coming alongside our kids at Nickerson Gardens. It's coming full circle! Praise God!

Hollywood Impact Studios continues to grow. We've started our third semester at the Pitchess Detention Center with (28) student/inmates. We're also excited to announce that we've started a second program, this time, at The Nickerson Gardens Rec Center in Watts, California. We have (13) students ranging in age 13 to 21. Besides teaching in the classroom they will be taking some exciting field trips and will get some hands-on workshops. We're excited to see what God does with this new program.

We're proud to announce that our second semester class has graduated. We started with 36 student/inmates and after twelve weeks only (8) remained. But we're very proud of those (8). As in our first semester we gave out scholarships from Mole-Richardson Lighting, The Mostin Family and 20th Century Fox Animation. We also gave (2) writing prizes for best short screenplay.

We just shot our second episode of ABOVE THE LINE (an education series for use in the classroom). "Wish List" is a new column for the blog. We feel we should put out a wish list of things HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS needs and see what God does.

We are looking for "a space" outside the jail to hold classes, meetings, Bible study, etc. This space could be vacant building, house or store front that we could lease for $1.00/year. It could even be a piece of land where we can put a trailer. Basically we're looking for a home for HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS anywhere in the great Los Angeles County area.

Second, one of graduates is in need of a car. Nothing fancy, just a good transportation vehicle to help him with work.

Wow, it's hard to believe but we're almost finished with our second semester. Graduation is just around the corner. We started out with (36) inmate/students but only have(8) remaining. Some were "early releases" and many were "rolled up" (kicked out of the MERIT Program). But we trust God in all this. We're so proud of these guys that have made it through these 12 weeks. They're the cream of the crop. They've shared with us how much God has moved in their lives.

It is exciting to share this photo of one of our alumni from our very first semester. He's doing great! "Mas" helped us out on a camera test at Fox a couple of weeks ago. He did a great job and worked very hard. He was beaming all day.

Pencils down! Our first writing program is done. Derek and John covered screenwriting, magazine writing and how to write a short story. Now that the class is done, our inmate/students have an opportunity to enter a screenwriting contest. Today is the deadline to turn in their scripts. Prizes will be awarded the first week in January.

After we'd already started our second semester, many of our student/inmates asked if we could offer a writing class. We didn't know how we were going to pull that one off. But God provided! We're excited to report that in conjunction with the ministry, 168 Film Project (www.168project.com), John Ware and Derrick Warfel came onboard and are teaching (4) two-hour writing classes. Their class will cover script writing as well as short story writing and magazine writing. Our guys are very pumped about the classes... Much thanks to John Ware and Derrick Warfel.

We're about halfway through our second semester at The Peter Pitchess Detention Center. We started with 32 inmate/students but are now down to 26. Some were "early releases" a few got "rolled up" (in trouble and kicked out of the program).

It's funny how each group of student/inmates are so different. During the first semester I taught an overview of the script writing process and I watch as most of the men yawned. I almost dropped the class this semester.

I'm so glad I didn't. This semester, same class, but we have about half the inmate/student are so interested in the script process that they've asked for a writing class. It looks like we'll be able to accommodate this request by teaching writing through "Pens in Prison".

HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS falls within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Departments, MERIT PROGRAM, a faith-based, rehabilitation and education program. Part of MERIT is The Alumni Program, which is designed to help inmates once they are released. The MERIT program meets at Grace Baptist Church every Tuesday Night.

Along with the inmates, their families also attend to learn ways to help them as they reintegrate back into society.

One of HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS requirements is that our graduates attend the Alumni Program. We think this is one of the best ways to insure their success. As Cyndi and I have been attending we've seen the numbers grow each week. God is moving mightily through this program.

There are numerous schools where you can learn about becoming a costumer, but one great way is to get an entry level job at a wardrobe company. There you will really learn your craft and meet those costume designers on television shows and movies who could be your next employer.

We're off and running again! Semester #2 began last Wednesday, October 7th with 33 inmate/students. About a third of the class are Veterans. This class is a little quieter than the last one, but I think that may be just first day jitters. We're all looking foward to what God will reveal through this bunch a men in prison blues.

Our first semester is over... We had a terrific graduation! Several of our graduates received generous scholarships from Moviola, Vocal Image and Mole Richardson Lighting.

Lives where changed, bringing some inmates to tears as they described what they've learned in this last 12 weeks.

The band was excellent as well. Although it was over 100 degrees, no one seemed to care. It was a great day! We can't wait to start the next semester!

Two Saturdays ago, classroom 42 was transformed into a television studio as our inmate/students became crew for the production of the first episode of ABOVE THE LINE.

Frank Cardea, Executive Producer of NCIS was our guest and Julia Denton our hosted.

I don't know why I was so surprised, but it was like a real half-hour, interview style television program... Shot in Hi-Definition.

Cyndi and I felt like proud parents.

Today's question comes from my wife, Cyndi. She was watching the History Channel last week and they were talking about how candy manufactures do a great deal of test marketing before they even launch a product. She asked why doesn't television do the same?

I think that's a great question. My thought is we probably should. Instead we make TV shows, air them and try and figure if America likes that show. Maybe we should ask the question, "America what do you want to watch on televion?" and then create shows based on those answers. That's just my thought on it... Give me yours.

We are now 9 weeks into our 12 week program. As the class progresses the inmate/students are becoming even more tight knit. It is so exciting to see how they are working side by side helping each other, just like a real film crew.

This class is not just ministering to our inmate/students but to all of the staff as well. God continues to do some amazing things at HOLLYWOOD IMPACT STUDIOS. One example was told to us by a deputy. He said, "In the general prison population, you would never see a Hispanic inmate helping an African-American Inmate," but we see that every single 'hands-on' class we offer. Thank you all for your continued support.

I am often asked, "How do I become a TV screenwriter?" By writing!

First you need to learn your craft, either by taking writing classes or reading good books about writing. Two authors I like are Robert McKee and Linda Seger. But you've got to write, write, write... That's the only way you get better.

For television writing, I suggest you write a "spec" script (or a couple) for the type of series you would like write for. For example if you write a "spec" BONES script that script would work for the CSI Franchise. Just so you understand you don't write a spec script for the series you're trying to write for. First of all, no one on the show will read it in fear of being accused of "stealing" your idea. Second who knows that show better than the producers who make their living writing for that series. Even if they would read it, they would be more critical on an outsiders script. Think about it, a writer on CSI doesn't know BONES any better than you would.

Once your spec script (or scripts) is written (and re-written), get a list of literary agents from the Writer's Guild of America and start knocking on doors. It will not be easy...

Last Friday, Cyndi and I drove down to meet with the people in charge of running the Rec Center at Nickerson Gardens in the Watts area of Southern California. This Rec Center is designed to target and help "At Risk" youth.

The program they're desiring will be different than the one we're doing at the detention center. It will be geared toward a younger student base, 14 to 19 years old. Besides teaching the careers of the television industry we will also expand the program to include Drama and Music.

Officer Yanez of the LAPD has been extremely helpful. We hope to launch this program in the fall.

Once again today's quote/story comes from one of our students at the Peter Pitchess Detention Center. I had just finished teaching and Stan Cassio was getting set up to begin his class when one of the students gave us a letter entitled, "A Second Change." Below are just a couple of excerpts:

"I just wanted to thank you [all] for allowing me to be part of Hollywood [Impact] Studios. I believe this introduction will sustain me during times of challenge, frustration and failure and will comfort me during times of confusion, pain and loss. --- I didn't believe it was possible for me. I truly felt I couldn't become an honest, loving person. In my mind change was not an option. --- Now I know that the power of words inspires the Power of Change. --- I have learned that Apostle Paul and Peter and the profit Jeremiah, all went to prison because they KNEW God, now I know I came to prison to KNOW God."

This is powerful stuff. I don't know who's learning more from the ministry them or us...

Today's question comes from a young College Intern: "I've heard that TV shows are no longer going to use film. I understand that they are going to shoot on Digital cameras, is that true? If so, what Digital cameras are they going to use?"

Not all TV shows are being shot digital, but it does seem to be a very popular option this television season. I don't know if this is simply a phase or a trend or the way of the future. I believe many people think that shooting digitally is going to save a lot of money. Unfortunately, the film makers end up shooting a lot more material when it's "only tape". We'll see what happens, only time will tell.

As for cameras, it seems that right now the most popular are the Arri D-21 (top), Sony F-35 (center) and the Panavision Genesis (bottom).

Besides these three, there are plenty of other excellent cameras out there.

Summer is settling in at the Peter Pitchess Detention Center as we are finishing the last weeks of classroom instruction teaching an overview of all the varied careers in the television industry.

We're now moving to the "hands-on" phase for the rest of the semester. Stan Cassio is in week three of teaching Avid Editing. And the guys are loving it. Basic Camera starts next week.

Today's quote actually comes from one of our students at the Peter Pitchess Detention Center. At the end of class we always discuss how God is working on our lives and how that relates to working in the television industry. During one of these discussion, a young inmate stood up and ask if he could read something he'd written. Below is what he said:

"God is giving me amazing opportunities in my life and He is watching me, seeing what I do with the blessings He gave me. Did I blow it or did I become fruitful doing the best I can, giving God the Glory. What will you do with the Blessings God gave you?" Merit Program Inmate.

I must admit, this students message and his sincerity really moved me. God is in that classroom and all of us are hearing him.

Last week, Stan Cassio and his tech crew from NEW EDIT delivered three Avid editing systems to the our classroom at the Peter Pitchess Detention Center. While they were installing the Avids, several of the inmate students (about 25) came by to see what they were doing. Many asked questions, and as a result Stan taught an improvised class on how to set up an Avid System. He was surprised and encouraged by their enthusiasm. Stan will begin teaching basic Avid Technology next week.

Our third class on pre-production went very well. There were a lot of good questions and interactions. This is only the classroom instruction; I can only image how these guys are going to react when we finally get into the hands-on portion of the class.

Well we finished the second week of teaching at the Peter Pitchess Detention Center in our "film school behind bars". This weeks class we taught about the life of a television episode. From Prep to Production to Post Production. "My students" could not be more enthusiastic. Great questions, great discussions.

I currently have 23 students from all different backgrounds. I do pray that what I'm teaching will resound with some of these guys and change their lives. Next week we teach on how a television script is developed from writer, to studio to network to broadcast.

Just a quick update on how our very first class went at the Los Angeles County Detention Center. It could not have gone better! PRAISE GOD! GOD IS GOOD!! Our "Students" seemed to be either all Christians or at least moving in that direction. We had lively conversations on television production, but also on the importance of having a strong walk as they pursue this industry. They are an excited and exciting group of men. They took a lot of notes and had great questions. The other thing that was really humbling was how appreciative they were that we were there.

It made me laugh as it's never happened to me before. One of the students asked to go back two slides on my power point demo. I was sure he'd missed a note about television production, he didn't. He missed the Bible verse that was quoted.

We are so excited to see what God does with this ministry. We can see it's going to be quite a ride, We're just so happy He is letting us be part of it.

MY THOUGHTS ABOUT "THE BUSINESS"

Having spent over 30 years in the television industry (See "about the Founder" at Hollywoodimpactstudios.com ), I'm often asked questions ranging from career advise to, where television is going, why shows are good or bad, etc. This column will discuss these issues and more. Not that I'm Mr. TV, but I have had a lot of different experiences; from writer, producer, studio executive to production assistant. I hope you find this informative.

Today's question comes from Mike a junior in high school. He asks if it's necessary to go to College to get into the television industry. The simple answer is "no" but... I strongly suggest people interested in going into the entertainment industry go to college. First off, it's good for your own life experience. But also, I think it helps you sort out what you want to do. At UCLA, for instance, they required that their film students take classes in all different disciplines. There are a lot of terrific film schools out there. One other piece of advise is to think about going to a junior college and getting an AA in general education. It's a good jumping off place. If for some reason you don't make it in the business you at least have a college degree that's not tied to the motion pictures/television industry.

I'm also asked which of the shows 20th Century Fox Television produces are my favorite. To be honest, I don't have a favorite. But I am a big fan of our series, "24". Here's a little behind the scenes material. I hope you find it interesting.

I never realized how much fun and exercise starting a ministry could be... Here's Cyndi and I spending the day hiking in hills and through Hollywood to get the perfect "Hollywood Photos" for the website and blog. We had so much fun, working for God!!

THE LAUNCH

Last Sunday, was our official "kick-off" at Grace Baptist Church. Approx. 30 people attented from over a half-dozen different churches throughout Southern California. A lot of interest, 20 people completed "Interest Sheets". Another great day!
